Deposits

The type of Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) you opt for, will also affect the amount of deposit required. The value of the deposit is usually the value of the insurance excess plus refuel value.

Documentation

Valid driver’s license
Most rental companies require a full, valid driver’s license held for a minimum period (often one year).

Some hire companies may require a license check code (although unlikely outside of the UK, it is recommended that you take this code just in case). A license check code is provided free of charge by the DVLA and provides a snapshot of your full driving history, driving status and any penalties you may have. The code is valid for 21 days and can be obtained online from the DVLA website.

International Driving Permit (IDP)
In some countries, an IDP is required alongside your regular license. You do not need an IDP to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein if you have a photocard driving licence issued in the UK. Check the Gov.UK advice for up-to-date guidance.
